Headache Treatment Adelaide

headaches adelaide

We help people in Adelaide overcome their headaches, restore pain free movement and return to doing what they love.

We all experience headaches at some point, whether it's from sitting for a few hours at work, after straining your neck or from a build-up of tension during a stressful time.

One of the most common sources of headaches comes from the muscles in the shoulder and neck that can become overly tight.

When they reach a certain threshold of tightness, they form knots, which leads to your neck stiffening up and movement gradually reducing over time.

Trigger points in the muscles can also refer pain, which means you will feel pain in a certain area, but the source is the muscles. The most common muscle that can refer and produce a headache is the upper trapezius (see picture below).

These muscle imbalances can be difficult to overcome on your own and possibly become chronic but there is definitely something you can do.

Our unique approach will have you feeling better right from day one with a combination of expert assessment and effective hands-on treatment.

Who we work with:

If you have the following symptoms there is a high chance we can help you:

  • You experience ongoing headaches and are looking for an effective long term solution

  • Your headaches are triggered from sitting in front of a computer or driving in the car

  • You sometimes wake up with jaw tightness + pain and often find yourself clenching

  • You feel ongoing tension in your neck and shoulders

How we help you:

  1. Perform a holistic assessment, giving you an accurate diagnosis and identify relevant contributing factors

  2. Bring relief through the use of innovative manual therapy techniques

  3. Educate and empower you to keep you headache free in the long term with a personalised home exercise program and help you identify your unique headache triggers.

Avoid the side-effects of medications:

Some recent research has demonstrated treatment by a physiotherapist with gentle manipulative therapy and specific neck and shoulder strengthening exercises is more effective than medication.

The protocol involved an individualized physiotherapy treatment plan with a progressive home exercise program

The three-stage structured program was designed to:

  • improve range of motion in the muscles and joints

  • optimise muscle strength

  • improve aerobic conditioning (e.g., with the use of a bicycle, elliptical machine, or treadmill)

  • improve postural awareness

  • optimise stress management strategies

Don't delay your treatment...

The occasional headache may be nothing to worry about, but failing to pay attention to ongoing headaches may end up causing you a lot of problems in the future.  If headaches are reducing your ability to take part in the activities your normally do, then it is time to get it looked at. In general, ongoing headaches or neck pain that is affecting your life is a sign that something is wrong.

A serious problem will not correct itself, and left untreated, can result in more pain and irreversible damage.
